On Thursday Senators Sinema and Manchin rejected Biden’s push to change the filibuster. It’s likely to end any efforts to pass significant party-driven legislation in 2022, as Democrats failed to come to an agreement on Biden’s Build Back Better agenda & shelved the bill initiative to tackle ‘voting rights’.
Senator Sinema ended the Biden administration’s voting rights bill by coming out fully against filibuster reform in a blistering speech on the senate floor. Sinema said that any changes to the filibuster would continue to create political division, even though she supports the voting rights bill.
“While I continue to support these bills, I will not support separate actions that worsen the underlying disease of division infecting our country,” she said.
Senator Manchin released a statement that said in part he: “will not vote to eliminate or weaken the filibuster… For those who believe that bipartisanship is impossible, we have proven them wrong. Ending the filibuster would be the easy way out.”
